Travelers Tales
“…we spend our years as a tale that is told” (Psalm 90:9)
Life is a journey. Those who follow the Lord receive encouragement and instruction from those that have gone before. In Traveler’s Tales, Greg Dowdy will guide us through stories of God’s faithfulness and wonderful work in this world. This Enjoying the Journey podcast is designed to engage the audience with remarkable stories and encourage them to follow the Lord more closely because of it. Traveler’s Tales explores the true story behind the famous hymn “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder.” The account begins with what seemed like a chance encounter in a Williamsport, Pennsylvania, alley in 1893. Youth pastor James M. Black met a poor girl named Bessie, whose brief life and faithfulness inspired a song that has comforted Christians for over a century.

Hymn History: When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder
1. When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there. [Refrain]
[Refrain] When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll, is called up yon-der,
When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there.
2. On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there. [Refrain]
3. Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder; I’ll be there. [Refrain]
