30 Days of Prayer September 28, 2012

“Pray without ceasing.”  1 Thessalonians 5:17

It is significant that the only thing God commands us to do without ceasing is to pray.  Dr. John R. Rice said often that, “All of our failures are prayer failures.”  Every matter in the Christian life grows out of our personal walk with the Lord each day.

In Daniel 6, the king of Babylon signed a decree that no man was permitted to pray for 30 days.  Of course, we know that Daniel, who was a man of faithful prayer, could not abide by that for even one day.  He refused to allow anything or anyone to hinder his communion with God.

Why would the devil want to halt prayer for 30 days?  Surely he could have asked for longer.  30 days seems like a relatively short period of time.  And yet, we know from experience, that in 30 days habits are formed.  Schedules are set.  Affections are shaped.  In 30 days a course may be set that will continue far beyond that month.

Satan understands more about the power of prayer than many of God’s people.  What if we were to get serious about prayer for 30 days?  Imagine the difference that could be made in one month if believers were to sincerely seek the Lord every day.

John Bunyan said, “We can do more than pray after we have prayed, but we cannot do more than pray until we have prayed.”  Prayer is the first work.  Prayer is the great work.

Would you take the challenge?  Would you make a commitment to spend some time in earnest prayer every day for the next 30 days?  Not only will you enjoy God’s presence and begin to see answers to prayer, but you will begin a pattern that you can continue for the rest of your life.  In prayer, there is no place to stop, but there is a place to start.  Start today.  “Pray without ceasing.”
