“I know where I’m going.” Famous last words – just before the embarrassing admission that we have lost our way! Along the journey of life we all need direction. Sometimes it just takes a little while to acknowledge it.

Years ago I was on an early morning drive and in desperate need of a cup of coffee. I asked the little person who lives in my phone for directions to the nearest coffee shop and she reported that there was a Dunkin’ Donuts just a few miles away. (For those of you who do not know, DD is the coffee that will be served at the marriage supper of the Lamb.)

I followed instructions. Go two miles. Get off at the next exit. Turn left. Go a mile and a half. “You have now arrived at your destination,” she proudly announced. There I was…sitting in the middle of a cow pasture on a rural east Tennessee road. No coffee in sight.

Now I am sure that somewhere there was someone laughing at me. But there I sat, off the marked path, in the middle of nowhere, wasting valuable time, and in greater need of a dark roast with light cream than I was just a few minutes ago!

Here is the vital question: who are you getting your directions from?

God’s Word is primarily God’s revelation of Himself. Yet this revelation is also given as direction. Scripture points us to God and then guides us into all of God’s will for our lives. The Holy Spirit uses the truth of God’s Word to provide definite direction.

Read again the opening sections of Psalm 119, that great psalm of the Scriptures, and notice how many references there are to our way and His way. The truth is woven throughout. I love verse 35, “Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.” Or consider verse 59, “I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.” And don’t forget the well known verse 105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

There are many intersections in life. We all need direction and Scripture provides divine direction for every stage of the journey.

Over the next few weeks our ETJ team will begin posting short clips from recent Bible messages on all of our social media platforms. They are just a few seconds long and are being selected to provide some truth from God’s Word to encourage you in your walk with Christ. We are calling them “Bible Guideposts.”

I hope you will watch for them and help to share them with others through your social media. Our prayer is that these brief principles for the journey of life will be plain “pointers” for other fellow travelers. May God use each of them to guide us all closer to God and help us take the next step with Him.

Safe travels.

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead.
