What in the World Is Going On?!? June 18, 2022

Have you noticed? It seems the whole world is “out of sync” and people everywhere have gone crazy! At times like these people reveal what is really in their hearts. At times like these the Lord’s people need to view our world through the lens of Scripture.

Anxious, searching souls are looking for answers, and they are only found in the Word of God. Look to the Bible for Heaven’s commentary on today’s news and current events…

A look at history reminds us that many generations have experienced terrific difficulty that we have not known to this point. A group of Jewish believers who were enduring social and economic consequences for following Christ were told, “Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin” (Hebrews 12:4). We are not yet martyrs!

A look at theology reminds us that at the root of the current chaos and confusion is the curse of sin on our planet. “They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course” (Psalm 82:5). Yes, the whole earth is off course! This is what happens when men reject the God of truth and light.

A look at prophecy reminds us that there is a reason all of this is happening – and it will get worse. The created world is winding down to the moment that God makes all things new. “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:22-23). We are witnessing the convulsions of a world in its final days. The world groans for the Creator; believers groan for their Savior.

A look at eternity reminds us that the best is yet to come for the child of God. The book of Jude describes the world in which we are living, but Jude is not the last book of the Bible! Revelation is God’s last word. “And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new…Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book” (Revelation 21:5; 22:7).

Find your answers, and your peace, in the Scriptures. Only God can tell you what in the world is going on.

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead. Download the interactive PDF.
