My Thoughts on the Last Night of the Year December 31, 2014

It was a joy to be with our church family tonight in the last hours of 2014.  We came to the Lord’s table together and our hearts were turned toward the Lord Jesus and what He has done for needy sinners.  Sinners like me.

The end of another year brings reflection and remembrances.  The beginning of another lends itself to rededication’s and resolutions.  While there is nothing wrong with either, both must lead us to Christ.  As I look back on the last twelve months I am overwhelmed with my own failures.  The best of intentions and unfulfilled promises.  Sound familiar?

If you are not careful such thoughts can lead to morbid introspection and despair.

Here is a better thought: My Father is the same today as He was on January 1, 2014.  And He will be the same one thousand years from now!  He never changes.  The one thing greater than my unfaithfulness is His faithfulness.  The nearer a man gets to God the more He will say, “O wretched man that I am!”  But he will continue to say, “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 7:24).

dec-31-calendarAugustus Toplady lived in the 1700’s.  He is most famous for his well-known hymn, Rock of Ages.  On December 31, 1767 he wrote in his private journal: “Upon a review of the past year, I desire to confess that my unfaithfulness has been exceeding great; my sins still greater; God’s mercies greater than both…My short-comings and my mid-doings, my unbelief and want of love, would sink me into the lowest hell, was not Jesus my righteousness and my Redeemer.”  And so it is on December 31, 2014.

The end of the year should lead to more than declarations to do better.  Tonight should be a time of true repentance.  Humility.  Brokenness.  The kind that brings us to the end of ourselves…and to Him.  Real repentance does not end with our sin.  It ushers us into the presence of a loving, gracious, wonderful Savior.  That is a good place to end the year – and to begin again.

4 Marks of A Christian Christmas

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead. I always look forward to reading “Enjoying the Journey”.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

It is good to learn from the past, but to not let the past drag us down, because we rest in Christ.

Toplady should have written a song (and maybe did) based on his words…..”my unfaithfulness has been exceeding great; my sins still greater; God’s mercies greater than both…My short-comings and my mid-doings, my unbelief and want of love, would sink me into the lowest hell, was not Jesus my righteousness and my Redeemer.” Those are pretty much thoughts and words to make you shout!!!

    Happy New Year!!
