What the “Cancel Culture” Can’t Touch March 11, 2021

The only reason people have to knowingly promote a lie is that, for some reason, they are afraid of the truth. God’s people never have to fear the truth! Truth sets you free (John 8:32).

In today’s society it is no longer sufficient to disagree or debate – if you don’t like the person or what they stand for, just “cancel” them! This cancerous mentality is permeating our world. But consider this: the only cause for seeking to cancel someone else’s voice is that you cannot debate the issues on the merits of your own argument. Or, in other words, you are afraid of the truth.

Baptist people have long held to the principle of individual soul liberty. It is our conviction that God has given every man freedom of conscience and that the conscience must never be coerced by another. Every other liberty grows out of this freedom.

I do not agree with those who hold differing theological positions, but I defend their right to hold them. I do not endorse philosophical, religious, or political views that are rooted in error – but I believe that you have the right to be wrong! No man has the right to strip another man of his right to believe or to express his beliefs.

In the days ahead we, no doubt, are going to face increased scrutiny and fight intensified persecution. Our world is in desperate need of more of John Bunyan’s “Valiant for Truth.”

Social media platforms may ban those who hold to absolutes and the screaming mob may seek to silence those who speak truth. But there are a few things the cancel culture cannot touch…

  1. They will never cancel the power of prayer. Wicked men in Darius’ kingdom tried that…but Daniel still got his prayer answered. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” (1 John 5:14).
  2. They will never cancel the power of the gospel. Rome may fight against the message of Christ but even the Romans would learn that the gospel of Christ “is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
  3. They will never cancel the truth of the Word of God. Trends will always change. Fads come and go, but “the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations” (Psalm 100:5).
  4. They will never cancel the promises of God. In such a negative world, isn’t it wonderful to think of the positive promises God gives His children in Christ? “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
  5. They will never cancel the work of the church. Let Satan and all the hounds of hell bring their strongest attack! Christ said, “I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18).
  6. They will never cancel the coming of Jesus Christ. Men may deny it, decry it, or deride it…but it is already on the Lord’s calendar and He always keeps His appointments. “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown” (Revelation 3:11).
  7. They will never cancel the final judgment. “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). Accounting day is coming.

Men cannot cancel God and time will never cancel eternity. Live today for things that the cancel culture can never touch.

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead. Download the interactive PDF.

Hello Brother Pauley, greetings from Costa Rica. It is great to remember the convictions of our faith, and the things that will hold us still during these troublesome times.
One note, on point #5, the text is Mathew 16:18 😉

Thank you my friend for pointing that out! God bless you.
