6 Reasons the World Is Getting More Insane June 4, 2024

The account of the Prodigal Son demonstrates the insanity of sin and this world.

6 Reasons the World Is Getting More Insane…And Why It Will Continue

Have you noticed in recent days the tragic loss of logic? Relativism has eaten away at the foundation of realism and the most ludicrous ideas are now accepted. This insanity is not due to a lack of education or information. It is not just a “mental health crisis.” The derangement and delusion we are seeing in the world is spiritual in nature.

Remember that when the prodigal son finally hit bottom, Scripture tells us “he came to himself” (Luke 15:17). His dream world suddenly turned into a nightmare and only truth could cut through the stupor of his sin. Here’s why there is a miserable insanity to sin.

The Insanity of Sin

  • Sin, at its core, is a lie. It promises what it can never fulfill and is built on deceit. Sin denies basic truths revealed by the Almighty (Genesis 3:1-5).
  • When men reject truth they begin to believe lies. Our world is upside down because people have turned truth inside out! Isaiah 5:20 speaks to this heart condition: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
  • Light disobeyed brings more darkness. “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:4).
  • If the heart is not right with God, the mind doesn’t work as God intends. We were made to be complete in Christ. Only Jesus can make the whole person to think, feel, and choose as it should. Romans 1 describes the apostate mind. Once men have “changed the truth of God into a lie” there is no limit to the depths of their depravity.
  • Sin never gets better. This is the deteriorating nature of disobedience to God. Moral, social, political, and educational programs can never arrest the decay caused by sin.
  • God tells us that at the end of the age evil and seduction will only increase (2 Timothy 3:1-5). This is what we are witnessing! “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13).

This is why our world is getting more insane…and why it will continue.

The Good News

YOU don’t have to be insane! Believe the truth. Live in the Word. Develop the mind of Christ. Walk in the light. The Spirit of truth will enable you to discern error and continue in truth.

Our world is not getting better, it is getting worse. Time is not winding up, it is winding down. However, for those who know the truth of Christ and His Word, this is the most exciting time in history! Our Lord is coming soon and this is our moment to confront darkness with the Light.

Instead of simply being annoyed or aggravated with sinners who are lost in the darkness of their own sin, we must love their souls. They were taken captive by Satan (2 Timothy 2:26). Only truth – only Christ – can set them free.

A culture complicated by sin is in desperate need of “the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3). Don’t try to win every debate or argue every issue. Give the gospel. Speak from God’s Word and your heart about the reality of sins forgiven and peace with God. Pray that God would bring prodigals to themselves and ultimately to Christ.

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21).  Weighing less than two ounces, the tongue is one of the smallest members of the human body. Yet it has such power.
