Daily Wisdom (Daily Living – Part 7) March 11, 2016

In recent posts I have shared several thoughts concerning the daily Christian life. On the front of my calendar I have written: “Plan for the future, but live one week at a time, one day at a time, one meeting at a time.” It is a constant reminder to not get ahead of myself…or more importantly, not to get ahead of the Lord.

In reality the Christian life is lived one moment at a time. Constantly depending on the Lord and His sufficiency at every twist and turn on the journey. The road of life is filled with intersections. Crossroads. Choices. Each traveler needs wisdom to know which way to take.

Read Proverbs chapter 8. It is the testimony of wisdom. She speaks to all of us “by the way in the places of the paths” (vs.2). At every juncture in life God makes wisdom available. Verse twenty promises, “I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment.”

To choose the right path each day requires wisdom. The Lord reveals that wisdom was present on the first day man was made (vs. 22-29). Wisdom was “daily his delight” (vs. 30). Think of it! God loves wisdom. It delights Him. If we are to follow Him, we too must love wisdom. We must find our joy in the daily discovery of divine direction.

This powerful chapter concludes with a blessing: “Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors” (vs. 34). Daily listening. Daily looking. Daily waiting. All for one thing – daily wisdom!

James 1:5-6 declares, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all me liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.” Pray a prayer for wisdom every day. Claim God’s promise of wisdom for every decision.

  • Acknowledge your lack. You and I do not have the wisdom we need on our own. Agree with God.
  • Ask. Be specific in your asking.
  • Believe. Like George Muller, put your finger on one of the divine promises found in Scripture and tell the Lord you are trusting Him to fulfill that in your life. Prayer cannot be a substitute for faith. Ask in faith.

Daily lack…Daily asking…Daily faith…Daily wisdom.

Daily Challenge: Start every day for the next week with a prayer for wisdom. Place James 1:5-6 in a prominent place where you will see it each morning and throughout the day. Memorize and meditate on the promise of God for daily wisdom.

The King Herod who built the Herodium is the same Herod who tried to kill Jesus, and ordered the slaughter of the babies in nearby Bethlehem. He knew his subjects hated him, so before he died, he provided for his tomb to be guarded after his death. After a couple of years, the money ran out so the guards went home. The vengeful locals trashed his palace and smashed his ornate mausoleum to tiny pieces.

The altar of sacrifice in front of the holy of holies in Arad. Even though it is a smaller imitation, the temple here gives the visitor an idea of how the Temple in Jerusalem appeared.
