Recently as I ministered in a beautiful southern city a local pastor began to describe all of the filth that has invaded their area. Immorality of every type. When I asked where it all began his answer was without hesitation, “The brewery’s came to town and every other evil followed them.” What’s true in a city is true in a life and in a family. When liquor comes it opens the door to every other evil.
Days of prohibition are now mocked. Even professed believers commonly claim that there is nothing wrong with moderate, social drinking. (For the record, if you have to drink to be social I would be very concerned what type of relationships you are building!) Culture has changed and churches have retreated, but the Word of God is still clear:
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise” (Proverbs 20:1).
Next week on our daily Enjoying the Journey broadcast we will finish our study of the life of John the Baptist. I hope you are making this trip with us. Remember that John was one of the men in Scripture who very plainly separated himself from wine (Luke 1:15).
Before we begin our new series in August I want to take a week and deal with “What God Says About Alcohol.” July 30-August 3 we will address this subject from Scripture. I hope you will listen and share it with others who could be helped by it.
My heart is so grieved by the destroyed lives and divided families I see everywhere because of liquor. I hate alcohol! I hate its effects and I hate the devil behind it. It has never contributed to society and it does not bring any good.
God’s Word is the last word on every issue. Join us as we study what God has to say about alcohol. His truth does not change by nation or by generation.
Thank you for speaking out against alcohol. My husband and I are very concerned with the trend of defending social drinking among believers.
I am as well. Thank you for your prayers.
Amen looking forward to reading.
Thank you for reading our articles. The series on alcohol will actually be audio messages that will air July 30-August 3 on our website or any podcast player. Click on the “Enjoying the Journey” logo to find them. God bless!
I hate alcohol too! My father died when I was 6 and I was “raised” by my alcoholic mother. I was furious when in a nationally recognized Bible study that they said drinking alcohol was our Christian liberty since it was not banned in the Bible. Apparently Jesus drank and His first miracle was turning water into wine. I feel like Jesus let me down.
Anyone who says that alcohol is condoned by Scripture is ignoring the plain teaching of God’s Word. Wine was used as a term for all fruit of the vine. It is my conviction that the Lord Jesus did not create fermented wine – fermentation is corruption and nothing our Lord creates is corrupt. He is the same God who said,”Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” You have seen yourself the destruction that alcohol brings in hearts and homes. Let’s pray that others avoid that path. God bless you.
