A President’s Day Prayer February 19, 2018

Today is President’s Day in the United States. In the war zone that is the American political system it is often easy to forget the spiritual conflict that is always raging. The enemy of souls is far greater than any perceived enemy on the other side of the aisle.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).

I have deep convictions related to our republic and the moral issues of our day. But it is more than politics. It is spiritual. The greatest need of our country is another great awakening and we must never lose that burden.

Patriotism and evangelism are not the same thing. I love America, but eternity will outlast our nation. The souls of men and the work of God are greater than any other need.

For that reason I am convinced that the greatest thing we can do for our nation is pray. And the most important ministry we have toward our president is prayer. The Apostle Paul said it best in 1 Timothy 2:1-4:

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Would you make this your prayer for our president today?

  1. Give thanks for him. Thank God that behind every earthly ruler there is a constant King who rules in the affairs of men.
  2. Earnestly pray that his decisions and direction will allow us to continue to live “a quiet and peaceable life” as believers.
  3. Ask that through his administration doors may be opened for many others “to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Pray for the man who is in authority right now in our nation. President’s day should be a prayer day for those who understand that our greatest need is not political revolution, economic recovery, or social reform…it is spiritual revival.

National answers come through personal prayers. “Pray without ceasing.”

The basin was probably used for the pouring of drink offerings. The stones are believed to represent specific Canaanite gods. Photo by John Buckner
