What Can We Do? February 1, 2019

The bad news and news of bad people seems to keep piling up. Like many of you I am sickened this week by the blatant rebellion in our country against what is true and good and decent. Our beloved nation is quickly moving toward the judgment of God. We need a spiritual awakening!

One of the dangers for God’s people in our culture is allowing conservatism to distract us from Christ. Too much talk radio and political commentary clouds the mind and steals the heart. Be informed. Stay active. Vote righteously. But keep your eyes on Jesus!

Politicians change and what is accepted as both legal and moral changes with time. Only the Word of God never changes. Root yourself and your family in what is eternal.

As our hearts are stirred by the great need around us there is something within that cries out, “What can we do?” While the Lord will have to show you specifically what you are to do in your area and with your influence, there are three things all of us should do…

  1. Love sinners. A world hardened by sin is producing harsher and harsher people. Society is filled with hate and anger. The one thing that is to set Christ’s followers apart is the love of God in us (John 13:35)! As we fight the devil and oppose the rising tide of wickedness we must not forget to love those who are lost and drowning in that sin. Keep a tender heart for souls. Pray for those who may hate you. Love sinners as Jesus did. Remember God did not command us to save a country, He commissioned us to seek the salvation of individual souls.
  2. Preach truth. This generation is inundated with lies. Satan has done a masterful job of promoting a system built on falsehood. Only the truth can set people free (John 8:32). We do not simply preach from pulpits; we preach every day. In our conversations and relationships we must preach the truth. Through our way of living we must preach the truth. By our attitudes and responses we must preach the truth. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17:17).
  3. Pray for mercy. Holy remnants do make a difference in the world. Praying people hold back judgment and advance God’s work. Will you be one of those people? Like Habakkuk on the eve of judgment, make this your prayer, “O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy” (Habakkuk 3:2).

Many believers are frustrated by their inability to change society. The truth is, we cannot. Christians may serve as salt and light – restraining evil and pointing to the goodness of God – but this story does not end with us ruling. It ends with Jesus ruling. His kingdom will come!

Until then, do what you can and rest in the knowledge that God will do what He must.
