5 Books To Read On Church Ministry Scott Pauley

In a previous post I shared some recommended reading on preaching, but all of us who have been in the Lord’s work for any period of time know that there is more to daily ministry than the preaching of sermons. Much more. Ministry is helping people where they are and leading the church as you follow Christ.

These are unusual days in which to minister, but God’s eternal message and timeless methods do not change. The following books have been a blessing to me, both as I labored with a pastor and now as an evangelist:

An All-Round Ministry by Charles Spurgeon (Spurgeon’s Lectures to My Students is more well known, but this volume addresses the biblical philosophy of ministry and the personal life of the minister.)

The Minister As Shepherd by Charles Jefferson (This is a classic book that shows the shepherding work of God’s servants. It is thought-provoking and convicting. One additional book on this subject that you may also be interested in is Lessons From A Sheep Dog by Phillip Keller.)

Becoming A First Century Church by Clarence Sexton (The pages of this book articulate the ministry philosophy under which I was trained as a young minister. Each aspect of the local, New Testament church is addressed.)

On Being A Pastor by Derek J. Prime and Alistair Begg (Not all of us are to be pastors but all of us in ministry are to help the pastor. While these authors come from a different background their words are a great help in understanding our calling and our work.)

Pastor to Pastor by Erwin Lutzer (20 short chapters in this little book tackle the problems of ministry. Indeed much of the ministry is just helping people though their problems! This is a very practical book.)

What books would you add to this list?

Moses Seat found in an ancient synagogue in Chorazin, in Galilee. The seat was located just inside the door of the synagogue and bears an Aramaic inscription with the name of the donor Yudan, the son of Yishmael who paid for building of the seat and its platform. (The seat pictured here is a replica placed where the original was found. The original is now in the Israel Museum.) Photo by John Buckner. Among other finds, the researchers found a synagogue built from the local volcanic basalt stones. Inside the synagogue, beside the ark where the biblical scrolls were stored, was a seat. It has been identified by many scholars as Moses’ Seat. Although it dates to after the time of Christ, this find is a remarkable fusion of biblical text and archeology. It illuminates the words of Matthew and shows us the custom He referenced.

Thank you for the post Dr. Pauley! Another good book is 10 Power Principles for Christian Service by Warren Wiersbe. This book delves into the mindset and philosophy needed for Biblical ministry.
