Recapturing the Hallelujah October 30, 2022

2209-30 What Jesus Taught About the Holy Spirit SLIDE_16x9

My memory is still vivid of the first time I heard the Hallelujah Chorus given in a pubic meeting. I remember watching that vast crowd of people stand in honor of the One who was being praised. Every time I hear the chorus it brings a flood of thoughts and emotions to my heart as I imagine what the song will be like someday around the throne of God! Eternity will be filled with hallelujahs.

God’s desire is that our hearts would be filled now with what Heaven is already filled with – His praise. While Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus is famous around the world, there is a “Hallelujah Chorus” that was given by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The final five Psalms all start and end with a hallelujah, “praise ye the LORD.” Psalm 146-150 has been appropriately called the “Hallelujah Chorus” of Scripture.

I would like to invite you to join me for a study of these amazing psalms. You can be grateful I will not be singing! Over the next several weeks we will study our way through the crescendo of praise, the climactic songs of the Hebrew hymn book, and find God’s way to a life of praise.

November is the month when people give more attention to giving thanks. While I appreciate that emphasis, I am personally convicted that much of our gratitude centers on the blessings instead of the Blesser. We are easily consumed with all of the gifts and so quickly forget the Giver. It is my prayer that our study will help us concentrate on the Lord Himself.

Thanks is most often for things; praise is for the Person. Learn to praise the Lord for who He is, and not just what He gives.

The new podcast series begins on Monday. Plan now to study with us and encourage others to listen as well. You may want to engage your whole family in a month of praise! How wonderful it would be if our hearts and our homes were filled with hallelujahs again.

The King Herod who built the Herodium is the same Herod who tried to kill Jesus, and ordered the slaughter of the babies in nearby Bethlehem. He knew his subjects hated him, so before he died, he provided for his tomb to be guarded after his death. After a couple of years, the money ran out so the guards went home. The vengeful locals trashed his palace and smashed his ornate mausoleum to tiny pieces.
