Tomorrow is a big day for our family. In just a few hours Lauren will turn 16 and Morgan will graduate from high school. As a dad it is both joyful and sobering to watch my baby girls grow up. Later this summer our youngest, Grant, will turn 13. (Pray for us, please!)

Today is reflective for me and for their mother. Where has time gone? Just last month they were all born. Just last week they were learning to walk. Just yesterday they started school. Or at least that’s how it all seems.

Life…a vapor.

I am not writing these things to depress you! Instead, I am encouraging you to make the most of every day. Don’t waste one.

Older, wiser people said to us years ago, “You will turn around and they will be grown.” Now I know they were right. Wow, I must be getting old!

Tammy and I have enjoyed our children at every stage and hope to enjoy the next seasons just as much. We will never pass this way again and I don’t want to miss a thing God has for us. We measure life in years and accomplishments, but God measures life in days.

For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. (Psalm 90:9-12)

A.W. Tozer wrote, “God will have given 365 days broken into 8,760 hours. Of these hours, 2,920 will have been spent in sleep, and about the same number at work. An equal number has been given us to spend in reverent preparation for the moment when days and years shall cease and time shall be no more.”

Make today count. Charles Wesley wrote a hymn on the morning of his birthday. I think it is appropriate to make it our own…

My remnant of days
I spend in His praise,
Who died the whole world to redeem:
Be they many or few,
my days are His due,
And they all are devoted to Him.

Yes, tomorrow is a big day, but so is today. Every day is a big day. It is God’s gift to us. Let’s make every day a celebration of Christ, starting today!

Within the text, John opens and closes his thoughts with the idea of "believeth." Sandwiched between are details concerning being "born of God"; conversion, compassion, conduct, and conquest. These details give clarity to three aspects of the Christian life: faith, love, and obedience. When present, they testify to the validity that one has been "born of God."

The word for wilderness is “meedbar,” (מדבר). This word is spelled exactly the same in the Hebrew text as “he speaks, or I speak.” He speaks/I speak is written the same (מדבר) but pronounced differently “meh-dah-ber.” Ancient readers of the Hebrew Bible saw these words and linked them in their minds. Therefore, the wilderness must be the place where He speaks to you. The spectacular cliffs of Sede Boger in the south of Israel near Beersheba. It has been identified by some scholars with the Wilderness of Zin, which is mentioned in several places in Numbers and Deuteronomy. It is a popular destination for modern hikers and climbers. Scott I remember sending your Mom a card the week you left home and went your first year to Crown. Now you and Tammy are experiencing the same with Morgan. It’s bittersweet but as you said last night, oh that our children will know the will of God for their lives. Enjoyed being in church with you and your family this week.

It was so good to see you all. Thank you for the very kind gift and, most of all, for your prayers. You and your husband have been a great encouragement. Thanks for being a friend to our family for so long.
