The Existence of God Michael Pack

The world around us and the conscience within us both point to the same truth -- the existence of God. Share this truth with someone today.

One of the fundamental truths that mankind has struggled to grasp is the existence of God. A 2023 Ipsos poll of 26 countries revealed that 21% ‘believe in neither God nor any higher spirit.’ In the United States of America, between 4% and 5% of the population self-identify as an atheist, one who does not believe in God.

We who come from Christian homes marvel at statistics such as these. How can anyone not believe that God exists? Should we write off these individuals as rebellious and hopeless? No, we should see them as God sees them: His creation that He loves and died to save. Many times, those who claim a disbelief in God have not been confronted by the mountains of evidence for His existence. It could be that they are misinformed or simply ignorant of the proof that supports the reality of God.

Let us examine some of the evidence for God’s existence so that we can more clearly point the way to those whom we may encounter who express doubt on this subject.

The World Around Us Points to God’s Existence

“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:7-10)

“The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, Where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world.” (Psalm 19:1-4)

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” (Romans 1:20)

When we view the marvelous complexity and intricacy of our universe, our planet, even our bodies, we cannot help but see the fingerprints of God. The very fact that our universe exists points to the necessity of a beginning. Most secular scientists claim that a cataclysmic event created the universe billions of years ago. But what caused the event to take place, where the primordial matter that makes up our universe came from, and other related questions, are unanswered. Indeed, honest scientists will admit that these questions are largely unanswerable.

The Scientific Method

Scientists follow a process referred to as the scientific method to carry out inquiry into different areas with the goal of building upon existing information to develop new scientific findings. The first step in this process is observation and involves empirical measurement of a process or phenomenon in an environment suitable for carrying out an experiment to confirm or disprove a hypothesis. Processes or phenomena that are incapable of being observed cannot be tested, and thus remain unscientific by the strict definition of the term.

The creation of the universe is incapable of being observed by humans, because humans did not exist at the time that the universe was created. Thus, scientists must exercise faith in the current scientific theory associated with this event.

Entropy

Scientists also believe in the laws of thermodynamics, the second of which is often referred to as entropy. Entropy is the process by which systems, such as our universe, our homes, and even our bodies, progress from order to disorder.

Do you know why we have to replace the roofs on our homes, our refrigerator when it goes on the fritz, or why we have to periodically apply a new coat of paint to our porch? The reason is entropy. Things break down. If we were to walk away from our home for five years, what do you suppose it would look like when we returned? Do you think it would be more orderly or more disorderly? It would be more disorderly, and the reason that scientists have given for this is entropy.

But when it comes to creation, scientists neglect entropy in favor of their belief in the Big Bang theory. How is it that this immense tangle of matter that exploded billions of years ago became more orderly over time, eventually becoming stars, planets, moons, even animals and mankind? This flies in the face of entropy. We expect things to fall apart, not to assemble themselves.

God Created the Universe from Nothing

In Genesis 1, God’s Word describes the creation of the universe and everything in it. This creation came about not from raw materials that existed, but from the very breath of God. The God of glory spoke the universe into existence. He said, “Let there be light“, and there was light! You may know many creative people; you might be one yourself. But whatever your gift —  artistic endeavors, carpentry, or other skills — you rely on materials you have to purchase or acquire to produce your work. Even the most talented artist cannot create a painting simply by speaking it into existence — only God can do that.

God’s Providence and Provision For Us Point to His Existence

“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:44-45)

“And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.” (Acts 14:15-17)

We take for granted that the sun will rise and set every day. The seasons will continue to change; the rain and snow will always fall. However, though many recognize these processes as natural, a supernatural God governs them. The book of Acts tells us that God allows the rain from heaven and the fruitful seasons as a “witness” to Himself. God’s provision of sunshine and rain “on the evil and the good” and “on the just and on the unjust” demonstrates His boundless mercy and love for all of His creation.

His greatness is evident in these acts that we depend on in order to exist. We wouldn’t make it very long without sunlight or rainfall. God knows that, and thus He is willing to provide these benefits to everyone whether they worship Him or not, or whether they even believe in His existence. Recognizing these daily blessings should help us to realize that these gifts are provided by someone, and that Someone is God.

The Conscience Within Us Points to God’s Existence

“(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)” (Romans 2:13-15)

Why do we feel guilty when we do something that we know is wrong? For that matter, how do we know what we did was wrong? It is because we are born with a conscience, a law written in our hearts. This conscience is not merely based on our preferences or opinions, but is based on something, or more accurately Someone, outside of us and larger than us.

Personal Examples

Let me illustrate this with two personal examples. When I was a child, I was playing with my brother in the front yard of our home. For reasons that only make sense to a child, I thought it would be fun to throw a croquet ball up into the air just to see where it would land. Unfortunately, where it landed was the hood of the family station wagon, creating a dent. I immediately felt guilty. But I did not apologize to the car; I apologized to my parents.

I once stole a grape from a grocery store when I was a child. Don’t ask me why — I was probably hungry and thought, “They won’t miss one of these grapes from the many clusters available for sale.” I later felt guilty for doing this, and I told my mother what I had done. She made me go back to the store and apologize — not to the grapes, but to the owner of the store. This is because we violate our conscience when we do wrong to a who, not a what.

When we violate our conscience by sinning, be it by telling a lie, performing a selfish act, or any number of examples, we feel guilty. If we think that our act does not hurt anybody, we are wrong. The truth is that we hurt ourselves. We also offend God by choosing sin contrary to His Law and His will for our lives. This guilt that we feel is an indication that God is real. Keeping a good conscience helps us to maintain a right relationship with God.

God Exists

The world around us and the conscience within us both point to the same truth — the existence of God. There is a God, He is alive and real,  and one day everyone will stand before Him. The good news is that God loves you! He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and His ways are past finding out (Romans 11:33). And yet, He stoops to His creation to fellowship with us. Christ made a way for all those who turn from their sin and believe on Him to spend eternity with Him. (Learn more about what this means HERE.)

If you have not decided to accept Christ as your Savior, the existence of God may cause you to fear for your future, particularly your eternity. But if you are a child of God, you can rest in the comfort of the knowledge that He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Be a witness today to a lost and dying world.

Today, rest in the fact that God exists. He has no beginning, and He will have no ending — He is eternal. And if you have accepted Christ as your Savior, you now possess eternal life, and you will spend eternity in His presence.
