History does repeat itself. The most prosperous nations on earth have eventually and repeatedly faced their economic downturns. All of us who have lived a little while can echo the sentiment of the Bible writer that, at some point, “riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven” (Proverbs 23:4).

We live in unstable times and are very likely on the verge of a recession. Yet the Lord and His truth are always the same. While it is easy to let our minds run wild and our imaginations carry us away, I hope you will consider these simple thoughts…

1. God’s economy does not change with this world’s economy. The Scriptures never promise that God’s people will not face poverty or trials. But we must remind ourselves that the greatest riches are not material, financial, or temporal. They are spiritual and eternal. Paul wrote that God’s people are, “As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things” (2 Corinthians 6:10). The fluctuation of the stock market, the rise in living costs, and the devaluation of a dollar are all reminders that this world is not our home and “stuff” will not last forever. God’s value, supply, and ledger is different than the smartest financial minds can understand or explain.
2. The Lord always takes care of His people. It might be good if we all went back in time and remembered the many times when the Lord graciously (and even miraculously) provided for our needs. David said it best, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread” (Psalm 37:25). He has never failed you, forgotten you, or forsaken you – and He is not about to start now! This is an opportunity to teach our children that God is enough and to demonstrate to another generation that He always keeps His promises.
3. Your Heavenly Father still answers prayer. We do not learn to pray when all is going well; we learn most about prayer when great need comes. Bring your situation and your fears to our all-loving and all-powerful God. Pray in faith and expect to see Him at work. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
4. When times are desperate people are most open to the gospel. Prosperity rarely drives people to God (though it should!). Adversity, however, reminds people of their weakness and need. All around you there are hurting souls who could use some good news. Give them Jesus! Speak in faith and point others to the real hope that is found in Christ.
5. Now is not the time to stop being a giver. Yes, we should be wise stewards. Save all that you can and avoid spending frivolously, but do not become stingy and self-centered. Tithe your income in faith and obedience. Give offerings as God blesses you. Help the poor as you are able. It is never a good time to rob God (Malachi 3:8-11). God will take care of those who bear fruit and feed others (Philippians 4:10-19).
6. All of this could be an answer to prayer. Many believers have been praying that God would do something to get the attention of our nation, to turn leaders and people back to Him. Historically, times of danger and desperation in the world have often been a prelude to spiritual awakenings. Could it be that God is working behind the scenes and beyond what we can imagine to send a revival? Look for the Lord in the middle of the mess.
7. This too shall pass. I do not mean to minimize the pain that people feel at this season, but it is vital to remember that this is just a season. “To every thing there is a season” and seasons always pass. The ebb and flow of life touches us all. It rains on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45).. But for the child of God you can be sure that through your Father’s deliverance or your Savior’s return, one way or another, this too shall pass. Until then, the Holy Spirit will continue to give you peace in the midst of the trial. Read 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 and look to the the eternal God.

I hope that you will ponder these thoughts and pass them along to others. There is no crisis in Heaven. Let’s not whine our way to the rapture of the church! We are not in the hands of government and circumstance – we are in the hands of our good God! Rest in Him today and every day.
