Ten Reasons Why I Believe the Bible is The Word of God | R.A. Torrey, biblical authority by Scott Pauley

The Bible is The Word of God

Few people want to talk about it and even fewer understand it.

Yet, all of life boils down to authority: whose authority will we live under? A spirit of rebellion characterizes the unregenerate world. Even many believers miss the truth that they live life under divine authority. Because modern Christianity is defined by emotion, experiences, and extra-biblical teaching, it displays evidence that many have forgotten the principle of biblical authority.

Our authority is not human ideas, but divine revelation. The foundation of faith is the Word of God. Without it, we have nothing to stand upon and nothing to share; but in the Word, we have all that we need! The Lord Jesus, interceding for His disciples, prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17). God’s Word is true and God’s truth is powerful.

Enjoying the Journey exists to evangelize the lost with the gospel of Jesus Christ, encourage pastors and local churches, and equip believers to walk with God and serve Him each day. However, there is no way to accomplish this mission apart from the transforming power of God’s Word. The Spirit of God works through the Word.

We unequivocally believe that the Bible is the very Word of God and that every word of the Word is divinely inspired. The Scriptures are the inerrant, infallible, completed, written revelation of God to man and, therefore, the all-sufficient, final authority for what we believe and how we are to live (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). Truth is not new and it is not old – it is eternal.

Evangelist R.A. Torrey gave his life to reach the world with the gospel and teach the Word of God. Because of this, he wrote, Ten Reasons Why I Believe the Bible is the Word of God. This book articulates what we believe about the sufficiency of Scripture. As you read these pages, may God both deepen your conviction in the Word and your commitment to study it and share it with others.

Ten Reasons Why I Believe the Bible is the Word of God is a classic work by Dr. R.A. Torrey. Additionally, this adaption is available free of charge. One can find our short biography of Torrey at the conclusion, as well as suggestions for further reading. We trust this resource will help you. Use it and pass it along to others.

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21).  Weighing less than two ounces, the tongue is one of the smallest members of the human body. Yet it has such power.
