3 Times Jesus Wept And What We Learn From His Tears May 22, 2019

stacey-franco-tMFw1l_qP-s-unsplash

Several months ago, I preached a message on the tears of Jesus. Our Savior was a “man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:5). This is more than mere emotionalism or shallow sentimentality – it is a reminder that He cares and that He carries our burdens. There are three times in Scripture that Jesus wept (John 11:35; Luke 19:41; Hebrews 5:7-9). Each is near the end of His life and each reveals what matters most to our loving God. He truly is “touched with the feeling of our infirmities” (Hebrews 4:15). His tears are a reminder that He loves sinners and cares for every soul.

A few weeks ago, I received a very kind email from a young lady who listened to that particular Bible message. She is a gifted poet with a heart to help others. Out of the truth that was shared, the Lord gave her a beautiful poem to express the message. I asked if I could pass it along to others and she has graciously allowed me to share it here. I hope that it will encourage you to see the tenderness of Christ and to ask the Lord to fill your heart with His own love for others…

I asked the Lord to give me love -
His love for souls in sin;
Instead He gave me weeping eyes,
A broken heart within.

I asked Him why He gave me tears,
He took me back in time
To when my Savior lived on earth,
When He was in His prime.

I saw Him go to where His friend
Was lying in a grave;
The sisters and their friends were grieved -
What love to them He gave.

You see my Savior standing there
Was also grieved that day,
He wept great heaving tears with sobs
Till those who saw could say:

"Behold we see now how He loved."
His tears revealed His heart
His love was evident through tears -
I saw God's point in part.

And then He took me to the day
The people hailed their King
While Jesus enters to their cheers
The children run and sing.

But when He saw Jerusalem
Stretched out before His eye,
His soul was moved with grief for them;
It moved His heart to cry.

Oh, as I read those solemn words
I feel that they are sweet
For in them I behold His love
So perfect and complete.

To one more place He took me now,
At midnight I beheld
The Son of God bowed down with grief
In deepest sorrow held.

I heard His weeping, strong and deep,
But through it I discerned
He prayed for me - it melted me,
His love for me I learned.

With tearful joy I thanked the Lord
For answering my prayer,
For giving me His love for souls -
His tears, His heart, His care.

Wow Patricia….the Lord is showing me the same thing. It’s OK to cry. His Son did. Have a 92-year-old abusive mother, whom I care for, and it has been dangerous for me to show any “weakness” through tears. God is healing me of this faulty thinking. Tears are a gift from God. I pray He heals you too.

Today, I felt all of this before I even read this poem. As I worshipped and intercede for those experiencing grief. Holy Spirit led me to “Jesus Wept” and this article came up in my search. This article and poem together has given me such assurance and peace in my spirit.

      Thank you!

Thank you for sharing Christina. It’s a beautiful thing to know that our Savior shows us tears are an expression of of pain both spiritual and physical and it let’s us know that he understands the pains of life, and thank God he’s touched with our infirmities keep allowing God to use you to write.

thank you Christina. for a newly born again Christian. Your poem moved me to a sobbing mess. The sacrifice of Lord Jesus has always haunted me. Now I feel more the love he had for us sinners. His suffering is our receipt for him taking away our sins and granting us salvation. Amen.

    • Richard Corporan on June 4, 2023 at 11:52 AM

My favorite verse in the Bible is when I learned that he cried and someone present heard his cry finding it curious able to relate his message that he too cried something everyone would want to know why and what I get from it is that he was human and his cry wasn’t even loud but loud enough that we heard it in ways you couldn’t even imagine but we know it today that he cried and that was his message was leading to what he wanted us to know what he was saying, symbolism play big part.

Yes indeed Christ Jesus wept, because, the then generation and even to day many people still didn’t know that, the Lord Jesus Christ is the Creator Son of the Almighty Father and He is the Creator and Sovereign of this our Universe. John 1 vs 2- 4. & Colossians 1 vs 15 – 17 and Colossians 2 – 9.

Tears are expressions of the heart. The important thing is to turn all emotion to God’s truth. He forgives, cleanses, and makes a way to start over again. God bless you.

        • Margi on April 29, 2022 at 12:55 PM

Oh Marty we can rejoice in our tears for the comfort and love Jesus gives us so freely. While I’ve had heart reaching tears, I can always hold on to Jesus through his spirit and his precious Word. Don’t be embarrassed. . . Try reaching out to Jesus. He is always there for us.

So Beautiful and moving. Thank you so much for sharing this poem. It is giving me the much needed encouragement and peace I sorely need at the moment…at this time when madness towards humanity is happening.

There is nothing like the adventure of walking with the Lord!

  10. Joseph Olney on December 14, 2021 at 1:35 AM

I read this and knew of the joy it would bring. For I was just saved not 3 months ago. When I was saved I tried to cry out but the only words that came out as I wept were, “I Am” and I repeated them 3 times. I found this sight when I googled “ I was saved when I cried out “I Am” three times.” I don’t know why it lead me here but here I am, a true believer in Him and if His power to unconditionally love us all.

    • scottpauley on December 17, 2021 at 10:57 AM

I am happy to hear that you have placed your faith in Christ as your personal Savior. He is the Great “I AM” and only He can save a sinner. There are a host of resources on our site that will encourage your faith and help you in your new life in Christ. I would encourage you to find a local church that teaches the Bible. Let us know if we can help in any way.

  15. Antoinette Williams on March 18, 2022 at 5:11 AM

This is a beautiful poem, I will speak at my husband’s funeral in the coming days. His favorite scripture he often would speak was “Jesus Wept”. Many has labeled that as being an “easy” scripture to recall and speak. But knowing my husbands life journey and the few times I saw him weep, I know that in his tears there were multitudes of love, joy, sadness, concerns and mostly what I know of my husbands tears each tear carried many of those whom he loved deeply and were imprinted within his soul. I believe that like Jesus wept it was because of the magnitude that comes with divine love from within.

    • scottpauley on March 19, 2022 at 4:40 PM

We are praying for you as you speak at your husband’s memorial service. May God continue to use his influence. God bless you and your family.

Thak God for Jesus, just knowing that Jesus is concerned about our well-being dead or alive That alone speaks volume and with Jesus doing that tells me you can be vulnerable yet not weak you can love cry yet know everything dead isn’t dead it can live Again so shed your tears

      Very true.

I am blessed to learn that there could be dignity in tears and so from now on whenever I am moved to tears, I will turn to Him who first loved me, He who understands how it feels and has solution to every problem. I invite this spirit into mine so as to extend more love and compassion to others just as our saviour did and still does.
