How well do you know the Spirit of God? Though we live in the age of the Spirit, there is so much confusion about Him. Some fall short of really understanding the Holy Ghost, while others go beyond what Scripture reveals about the third person of the Godhead.

I love the Holy Spirit. He is the One who first told me about Jesus (John 16:13-14), and the One who continues to teach me God’s truth (John 14:26). He is my prayer partner (Romans 8:26-27), and constant Comforter (John 14:16). Yes, I love the Holy Spirit!

If we do not have to be afraid of the truth, then we have nothing to fear about getting better acquainted with the Spirit of truth. How strange it would be for someone to live in your house for years and you never get to know them! Many believers know very little about the Spirit of God living within them. He is the most neglected member of the Godhead.

I am happy to introduce you to 5 books about the Holy Spirit that have been a great help to me through the years. Every book should be read through the filter of God’s Book. Examine each with discernment and measure men’s explanation by God’s revelation. These volumes are rich with truth because they were written by men who were filled with Scripture and filled with the Spirit…

He Shall Glorify Me by Oswald Chambers (The great devotional writer examines the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and the implications for every Christian.)

The Way To Pentecost by Samuel Chadwick (God has used this book in my life to teach me so much about the work of the Holy Ghost. It will drive you to your knees. Get this book and read it!)

The Holy Spirit: Power From On High by A.B. Simpson (Simpson examines the Holy Spirit in every section of the Bible. This is a very thoughtful study of God’s Word.)

Understanding The Holy Spirit by G. Campbell Morgan and Charles Spurgeon (This special edition is part of the “Pulpit Legends” series put out by AMG Publishers. In it, Campbell gives a detailed look at the person and work of the Holy Spirit in each dispensation. Twelve of Spurgeon’s classic sermons on the Holy Spirit are also included.)

Secret Power by D.L. Moody (Moody was a man who was yielded to and used by the Spirit of God. In this simple little book we find the open secret to spiritual power for the Christian life and work.)

Like all of these short recommendations I must remind you that this is not an exhaustive list. There are other helpful resources on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Our greatest lack is not good things to study, but hearts hungry to learn. May God make us hungry to know Him and teach us what it means to be filled with the Spirit.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
