Do you have a difficult time loving some people? Do you struggle to express love to others? Does it seem that even with those you love that your love falls short in so many ways?

I am convinced that one of the greatest needs in families, churches, our nation is a fresh understanding and experience of the love of God. We live in a hateful world and people can be so very harsh. Only God’s love can cut through the hardness of sinful hearts.

Some time ago we made available an adaptation of Henry Drummond’s classic work on 1 Corinthians 13. I hope you have downloaded your copy and read it through. You may even want to read it on your knees – I promise you it will lead you to prayer!

Tammy and I had the privilege to speak last week at the Faith for The Family Couples’ Retreat in Gatlinburg, TN. Pastor and Mrs. Clarence Sexton have been a great example to us through the years of what the love of God looks like in marriage. At the meeting I picked up a copy of his newest book, A More Excellent Way – Expressions Of Love.

This little book is a fresh look at the great love chapter of the Bible. Every generation needs authors who articulate in their day the great truths of Scripture. I am so happy that Pastor Sexton has shared this wonderful resource.

Here is a brief excerpt from the book:

We can say “I love you” in many ways, but our deeds are more important than our words. Our private lives tell the real story. Our loved ones are totally turned off by public expressions of love that are not lived out on a daily basis in private life…

God wants us to know that the love He enables us to have will be expressed in deeds. These are the expressions of His love.

Pastor Sexton goes on to examine each of the 15 action verbs that God uses in the passage to describe the expression of biblical love. They are deeply encouraging and convicting at the same time!

I want to encourage you to order your own copy. It will not only help you in marriage, it will help you in every relationship! The love of God truly is “a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31). Order this little book from Faith for the Family and ask the Lord to do the miraculous in your life – to enable you to love others as He loves you.

Journey through 1 John

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.” (John 1:47-48)

Why the Story of Nathanael Sitting Under the Fig Tree Matters

It also discusses the Four Sermons in Haggai It is in that context that God raises up the prophet Haggai with four sermons in four months. The Word of the Lord comes to Haggai, and he preaches four sermons. Each one of them is dated for us. Each sermon targets a different problem. You can read them in Haggai chapters one and two. In his first sermon (Haggai 1:1-15), Haggai preached on the danger of waiting when we should be working. They were waiting for a sign to build. He said, You don't need a sign, you need to obey God. Haggai's second sermon (Haggai 2:1-9) explained the danger of lamenting the past and missing the present. They were sorrowing over the destruction of the past temple. God said, Build a new one. It was G. Campbell Morgan who said, “It is impossible to unlock the present with the rusty key of the past." Many people are bogged down in their past and miss the present. Keep in mind what is at hand and what is ahead. The third sermon he preached (Haggai 2:10-19) described the danger of seeing only the material and neglecting the supernatural. They could see the work that needed to be done, but they missed the fact that God had resources that would help them get it done. The Lord was behind all of this. The fourth sermon (Haggai 2:20-23) warned against the danger of recognizing who is against us and forgetting who is for us. They were concentrating on the opposition and forgetting that “greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). A journey through Haggai shows us the importance of performing the work that God has told us to do, and His glory in our obedience. Image leads to an overview of Haggai
