A New Song, A Timeless Truth, and Our Eternal God March 28, 2023

The Lamb is Worthy

So much of life is measured in values. Real estate, the stock market, retirement portfolios…everything is discussed in terms of worth. But the greatest “values” are not physical, financial, or material – they are spiritual! Adrian Rogers used to say, “To find out how rich you are, add up everything that money cannot buy and death cannot take away.”

In the end, lasting value is connected to the eternal God. The question is not: “What is your worth?” The real question is: “Is He worthy?”

The answer to that question is a resounding YES! He is worthy of all.

Even the word “worship” is rooted in the principle of worthiness. On eternity’s scale our God is worth more than all of this world put together! Listen to the worship that is offered around the throne of God:

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created…And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. (Revelation 4:11; 5:9-10)

Many years ago I heard the story of two Moravian young men who sold themselves into slavery, in order to access an island that had never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ. On the day of their departure they lifted their voices and said, “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of his suffering!” He is worthy.

This Moravian cry became the heartbeat of a dear friend of mine who is now with Jesus. Stephen did not live his life for what most people estimate to be of value; he gave his life for the One who is truly worthy. My brother spent his life telling others about Jesus and invested his life in eternal riches.

Joshua Cehulik recently wrote a beautiful song as a tribute to Stephen’s life, and in honor of the Christ who is worthy of all. This doctrinally rich song captures the cause of the Moravians, the testimony of my friend and fellow worker, and the passion of all who understand that Christ is worthy of everything. You may watch the video, The Lamb is Worthy, or listen on your preferred streaming platform here. (An arrangement by Casie Ravert in sheet music form is also available here.) I have listened to the powerful words many times and find myself singing them throughout the day.

Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 7:12)

Jesus is worthy.

M’Cheyne’s Bible Reading Plan Each year I adopt some plan for my daily devotional reading of Scripture. To be honest, I try to vary this a little each year to keep it fresh. Over the last year, I have been using a plan that Robert Murray M’Cheyne developed for the people that he pastored. It is helpful for several reasons: It leads you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice during the year. It gives a variety of Scripture passages to read each day - historical, prophetical, and devotional. It divides the readings into readings for the morning and for the evening. It promotes a reading for private devotions and one for family devotions. It encourages the church family to read through the Bible together. M’Cheyne’s heart was to strengthen families and the church family, while deepening the personal devotion of each Christian. I can tell you from personal experience, that it has been a delight to follow. (Read M'Cheyne's full introduction to his system HERE).  We have decided to make M’Cheyne’s plan available through Enjoying the Journey this year, with the prayer that God will use it to lead all of us to a life full of the Word in the days ahead. Download the interactive PDF.
