Have you watched the news lately? At times it seems that the whole world has gone crazy. Logic has disappeared and common sense is at an all-time low.

Some say it is a sign of the times, and, while I would agree, I would also say it is a sign of sin. There is a miserable insanity to sin. Sin at its core is a rejection of the God of all wisdom. When you reject the God of wisdom it naturally leads to foolishness. This is how Solomon could know so much and still do so much damage.

In short – sin is stupid.

Reject truth and you believe a lie. Turn from light and you open the door to darkness. We live in a world of increased education and incessant information, but there is a sore lack of wisdom and discernment. Only God gives that…and He only gives it as we follow His way.

The next time you get aggravated and annoyed by the dumb ideas and ignorant attitudes so prevalent in our culture remember this: they are espoused by eternal souls who desperately need God. Political explanations and moral reasonings will never change depraved hearts. The only answer to the complexities of our day is the simplicity of the gospel of Christ.

When Asaph confessed his sin to God he wrote, “So foolish was I, and ignorant…” (Psalm 73:22). We have all been there. We would still be there if it wasn’t for God’s mercy.

So much insanity! But even in the depths of sin and its effects there is hope in the Lord Jesus. There was a moment when the prodigal son, sitting in the hog pen, “came to himself” (Luke 15:17). Pray this for sinners who cross your path. Pray this for leaders who insist on plunging our nation deeper into rebellion. Pray this for those you love. Speak the truth to them in love and speak their name to God in prayer. Only the purity and clarity of the gospel can cut through the mess in our world.

Every sinner needs to know the One who said, “I am…the truth” (John 14:6).
