Dealing with Sadness May 11, 2021

In a generation deteriorating because of sin we must always guard against allowing our own spirits to deteriorate. Sad days must not become sad Christians!

Many are sad because of circumstances in our world. Look again…all around is the goodness of God! Every breath, every ray of sunshine, every bird singing, every new day. The world is in bad shape but the Lord is always good.

Some are sad because of the uncertainty of the future. Look ahead…beyond this time is eternity – we have the hope of Heaven! God’s people have a certain future rooted in the promises of God.

All of us are sad at times because of disappointment with others. It is then that we must look within to the joy of Jesus! Christ within. Christ alone.

Who can cheer the heart like Jesus,
By His presence all divine?
True and tender, pure and precious,
O how blest to call Him mine!

This does not mean that all of life is laughter and fun. When we talk about “enjoying the journey” it is important to remember that each stage of life’s journey is not the same. Any traveler will testify that every road is not straight and every flight is not smooth. Yet the Christian has the constant companionship of Christ at every step. Our joy is rooted in Him and He never changes!

The secret to keeping a glad heart is not listening to your emotions but choosing your thoughts. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren…think on these things:”

  • whatsoever things are true – Jesus IS “the truth” (John 14:6). Think on Jesus!
  • whatsoever things are honest – Jesus is completely honest. Think on Jesus!
  • whatsoever things are just – Jesus is the “Just One” (Romans 3:25-26). Think on Jesus!
  • whatsoever things are pure – Jesus is pure (1 John 3:3). Think on Jesus!
  • whatsoever things are lovely – Jesus is the “altogether lovely one” (Song of Solomon 5:16). Think on Jesus!
  • whatsoever things are of good report – Jesus is always good. Think on Jesus!
  • if there be any virtue – Jesus is full of virtue. Think on Jesus!
  • and if there be any praise – Jesus is to be praised (Revelation 4:11). Think on Jesus!

I am reading through the gospel records right now and have been reminded that spending some time with Jesus every day does the heart good. Listen to His word to sad hearts: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Think on Jesus and be of good cheer!

The King Herod who built the Herodium is the same Herod who tried to kill Jesus, and ordered the slaughter of the babies in nearby Bethlehem. He knew his subjects hated him, so before he died, he provided for his tomb to be guarded after his death. After a couple of years, the money ran out so the guards went home. The vengeful locals trashed his palace and smashed his ornate mausoleum to tiny pieces.

The altar of sacrifice in front of the holy of holies in Arad. Even though it is a smaller imitation, the temple here gives the visitor an idea of how the Temple in Jerusalem appeared.

    Amen Brother Pauley.
Christ our Saviour makes all the difference in this life and the next!

    1 Corinthians 15:19-21
[19] If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. [20] But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. [21] For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
