America, “It Is Time to Seek the Lord.” Scott Pauley

These are critical days in our nation and in our world. As we approach the 250th birthday of America, this is a time for God’s people to seek the Lord!

Those who love Christ should have a special love for their own people and a desire to see them come to the truth (Romans 9:1-3; 10:1). I do love the Lord and I love the country where God sovereignly allowed me to be born. I love America.

A Critical Time for America

These are critical days in our nation and in our world. As we approach the 250th birthday of the United States, this is a time for God’s people to seek the Lord! The Old Testament prophet Hosea penned it best:

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you (Hosea 10:12).

We have reaped the sowing previous generations did in our nation. Our children and grandchildren will reap what we sow. For believers, every celebration should be a reconsecration. When we recognize the goodness of God upon us, His goodness should lead us to repentance (Romans 2:4).

  • As a citizen, I am grateful for the privilege to live in this land of liberty. As a Christian, I am burdened over the spiritual bondage that sin has brought to our people.
  • As citizens, we should thank God for the rich heritage we have been given. As Christians, we should intercede for the lost and seek the Lord for spiritual awakening.
  • As citizens, it is good for us to know our history and teach it to our children. As Christians, we must major on preaching the good news of Christ and helping prepare souls for eternity.

A proper interpretation of Scripture keeps everything in its proper place. We are not ushering in a lasting kingdom in this world. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can do that, and He will. Our gospel is not a national gospel – it is the gospel for all nations! But it is evident in our history that God has graciously and providentially used our nation to further the work of the gospel around the world. I am convinced this is one of the reasons we have enjoyed such miraculous blessings.

It Is Time to Pray Again!

For the next two weeks on our daily ETJ podcast we are airing special episodes on the spiritual need of our nation. These studies from Scripture are given with a prayer that God will turn our hearts back to Him in these days. The spiritual conflict rages and the victory will be won through prayer.

George Washington, at the height of the Revolutionary War, spent a night as a guest in a home. Through the paper thin walls, he could be heard crying out to God in the middle of the night. Washington’s prayer was recorded:

And now, Almighty Father, if it be Thy holy will that we should obtain a name and a place among the nations of the earth, grant that we may be enabled to show our gratitude for Thy goodness by our endeavors to fear and obey Thee.

Bless us with wisdom in our councils, success in battle, and let our victories be tempered with humanity. Endow, also, our enemies with enlightened minds, that they may become sensible of their injustice, and willing to restore liberty and peace. Grant the petition of Thy servant for the sake of Him Thou hast called Thy beloved Son; nevertheless, not my will, but Thine be done. Amen.

God has answered many prayers for our nation. It is time to pray again. “It is time to seek the Lord.”
