Living In Uncertain Times March 17, 2020

The world is shaking…but God is not! These are uncertain days but the people of God have a certain future. He has not failed us, forgotten us, or forsaken us – and He never will!

How can you live with confidence in uncertain times?

  • Rest in what you know for sure. When there are questions that cannot be answered always go back to unchanging truth: God is good. Rehearse His goodness in your own conversations. Recognize that the same good God is at work now. None of this has taken Him by surprise and we may be surprised how the Lord uses this for His own glory.
  • Stay hopeful. Do not allow the news media to set your tone. Stay in Scripture and keep your eyes on Jesus. In fact, it may be best not to spend so much time listening to the same depressing reports! Meditate on the good news found in God’s Word.
  • Remember that the greatest movements of God have been birthed in times of crisis. It was while the primitive church was facing the most intense persecution that God multiplied the church! Spiritual awakenings have most often coincided with disaster and desperation. The Lord uses such times to get our undivided attention. Ask God to send a genuine revival, and to start it in you.
  • Look for opportunities to share and show the love of God. Everybody is having a hard time. Everywhere you go people are anxious. Unbelievers are searching for answers and there has never been a greater moment for a Christian witness than at this time! We may not be able to have large gatherings but the Lord can still make divine appointments for us.
  • Enjoy your family and make the most of quiet times. Sometimes God makes us sit still and slow down. Take this as the gift of God. Talk to one another and talk to the Lord.

There are certain Scriptures that I go to when I am troubled. I would recommend that you do the same. One of my favorites is:

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

Over the last few days the Lord has continued to bring to my mind an old song. It was written in the dark days of World War II. The Allies were fighting in Italy. Supplies were rationed at home. The economy was limping along. The future was uncertain.

A pastor’s wife in Pittsburg was looking through the casualty list in the local newspaper and thinking of the verse that says, “In the last days perilous times shall come…” when suddenly lyrics began to come to her mind. She began to pen them on a little pad she kept in her apron. That was 1943. The words are as powerful and needed today as they were then…

In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

In times like these you need the Bible,
In times like these, O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

In times like these I have a Savior,
In times like these I have an anchor;
I’m very sure, I’m very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

So anchor your life in Christ and the Word of the living God. Press on! And sing your way through uncertain times.

    Do you have any suggestions for those who are alone without family?

      I believe this is where our connection to the family of God is so essential. While we can’t all meet together right now we can connect regularly by phone, online, etc. Take advantage of every opportunity like this that is available. Fellowship is important, even if it is from a distance. God bless you and so many others who are alone with a special sense of Christ’s near presence!
